Blue Ridge Institute and Museum
  Visitors will enjoy viewing how life was lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the 1800?s on a re-created 1800 Virginia-German farmstead. Open mid-May through mid-August. Sat.10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sun. 1-5 p.m. The Blue Ridge Institute Galleries showcase the best of regional folkways in such areas as crafts, music, customs, and decorative arts. The Blue Ridge Heritage Archive is an invaluable resource in the study of folk culture. Annual events are the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival held the fourth Saturday in October and the Blue Ridge Draft Horse & Mule Show held the fourth Saturday in July. From Martinsville, Ferrum is about a 45 minute drive on US 220 north to Rt. 40 in Rocky Mount. Follow Rt. 40 west 10 miles to Ferrum College. The Museum is located on the western edge of the campus.

Blue Ridge Parkway-Mabry Mill-Morrisette Winery
  The Parkway, an easy 50 mile drive up US 58 west or US 220 north, is ranked ?America?s most scenic drive.? Mabry Mill, a working grist mill built in 1910 has been called the most photographed spot in America. The National Park Service operates a restaurant there that specializes in buckwheat cakes and country ham. (540-952-2947) If you prefer gourmet food, continue up the Parkway from the Mill a few miles to the Chateau Morrisette Winery. Tours and tastings are offered daily and the luncheon and dinner menus offer interesting gourmet selections.

Booker T. Washington National Monument
  This great black educator founded Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and was a powerful political force and spokesman for black Americans until his death in 1915. His autobiography, Up From Slavery, recalled his childhood in Franklin County, Va. The park includes reconstructed farm buildings where demonstrations of farm life in Civil War Virginia help bring to life the setting of Washington?s childhood. The monument is about a 45 minute drive up US 220 north to Rocky Mount and east on St. Rt. 122 (12130 Booker T. Washington Highway, Hardy, Va.). Administered by the National Park Service, the site is open year round except Jan. 1, Thanksgiving, and Dec. 25. Call 540-721-2094 for more information.

Historic Danville
  A short 30 minute drive down US 58 east takes you to Danville, home of Dan River Mills and the last capital of the Confederacy. Several historic tours are offered and brochures may be secured at the Danville Area Chamber of Commerce, 635 Main St., Danville. Victorian Walking Tour of Millionaires? Row is a must. You?ll see one of the finest collections of Victorian and Edwardian architecture in the South. The Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History is a fine example of the grandeur of the mansions. Jeb Stuart Birthplace

Reynolds Homestead CEC
  The birthplace and boyhood home of R. J. Reynolds who founded the tobacco company bearing his name. The 19th century restored home is a national and Virginia historic landmark. The Reynolds Homestead Learning Center and Reynolds Homestead Research Center are located at the site and are extensions of Virginia Tech. The Reynolds Homestead also offers a variety of performances and art exhibits throughout the year. Allow 25 minutes to reach from Martinsville. Located off Highway 58 west in Critz, VA.

Smith Mountain Lake
  With 22,000 acres of water, a mild climate and plentiful recreation, Smith Mountain Lake is one of the premier resort lakes in the eastern United States. Fishing, boating, swimming and golf are a few of the leisure activities offered. Contact the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce for more information. From Martinsville take US 220 north to Rocky Mount and east onto St. Rt. 122. Allow approximately 50 minutes driving time.

Virginia Museum of Natural History
  The Virginia Museum of Natural History is the state's natural history museum. Founded in 1984 as a private foundation, the museum became a state agency in 1988. The Virginia Museum of Natural History is a place where scientific research about the Commonwealth of Virginia's natural history and public understanding merge. Exhibits, education programs for all ages, and publications translate the museum curators' scientific research into easily understood language and concepts. The mission of the Virginia Museum of Natural History is to interpret Virginia's natural heritage within a global context in ways that are relevant to all citizens of the Commonwealth. The museum features award-winning exhibits, groundbreaking scientific research and collections, education programs for all ages, an expansive library, fun family festivals, and spectacular events. Visitors can complete their visit in the Museum Store and the PALEO Cafe.

The museum is open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is closed on Sundays, as well as Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. Admission is: Adults $9; Seniors and College Students $7; Children and Youth 3-18 $5. VMNH members and children under 3 are free.
