  Did dinosaurs just pass through Virginia on their way elsewhere, taking only meals and leaving only footprints? Or did they live and die here? Are dinosaur fossils out there, somewhere in Virginia waiting to be discovered? Scientists at the Virginia Museum of Natural History think that there are dinosaurs out there, and their ongoing research and excavations reveal new information about Virginia dinosaurs all the time.

As you visit the exhibit Messages from the Mesozoic, experience the story of Virginia fossil discoveries and learn more about the “missing” Virginia dinosaurs. Learn about types of fossils, how fossils are formed and where they are found. Learn what a dinosaur is by comparing and examining different specimens. See examples of fossils found in Virginia and elsewhere. Become a Virginia fossil lover!

  Provides an overview of beading which covers different beading techniques, different types of beads, the difference of metals, different tools, and when to use them, and supplies. The class provides students with step-by-step instructions on the different ways to create and close off a piece of jewelry using elastic, memory wire, multiple strands, lariats, and strung pieces. The techniques can be used to create limitless original pieces. This class gives students both a practical knowledge base and ideas on how to spark their imaginations to express themselves creativitly.

  Develop an appreciation of the wood lathe and wood turning skills. Instruction includes turning between two centers for candle holders, goblets or chair legs and faceplate turning for bowls, platters or boxes. This class will cover safe lathe operation, tool sharpening, sanding, and finishing techniques. Participants should complete 2-4 basic projects during this class.

  This course will introduce you to all the basics of glass fusing. You will learn to cut glass, select the correct types of glass, and design a project. Sep 11 - Oct 30 - Poe’s Playground - Piedmont Arts - 10:00 AM
  These exhibits remain admission free through the membership support of people like you!

Poe’s Playground is a collection of work inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s life, his art and the places he haunted during his lifetime. Poe's stories inspire artists to examine the creepy, melancholy and frightening. Poe's Playground features works by Caryl Burtner, Jamie Burwell Mixon, Mark Chatterley, Kathryn Henry–Choisser, John Moser, Amie Oliver, Noah Scalin and Chris Semtner. This exhibit was organized by 1708 Gallery in Richmond, VA.

Also featuring portraits of the women who were part of Edgar Allan Poe's life and who inspired his work. The original acrylic paintings in this exhibit were created by internationally exhibited artist and Poe Museum Curator Chris Semtner. Among the pieces in the show are portraits of Poe’s wife/cousin Virginia Clemm Poe; Jane Stanard, his “first purely ideal love” who went insane when Poe was a child; Elmira Royster Shelton, the woman to whom Poe was twice engaged; and Mary Rogers, the cigar girl whose murder inspired Poe’s story “The Mystery of Marie Roget.” This exhibit is on loan from the Poe Museum in Richmond, VA.

  Learn the basics of leatherworking. Students will learn the history of tanning leather and transforming it into a variety of items. Tools, stamping, dyeing, and sewing leather will be taught with each student choosing a project.

  Learn to use a set of small straight needles to knit a pair of socks. Each student needs to be able to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off to start this class. These socks will be knitted from the top down to the toe. Sep 25 - Rabies and Vaccination Clinic - Martinsville-Henry County SPCA - 9:00 AM
  There will be a rabies vaccination clinic at the SPCA conducted by Dr. Eric Lorens of The Pet Clinic of Rocky Mount on Saturday, September 25th, from 9am to 12noon. One and three years rabies vaccinations will be available as well as Distemper vaccines. Cost is $5 for one year rabies and $10 for all other vaccines.

New this year we will have Heartworm testing available for $25, and for $40 you can get the exam and prescription (does not include heartworm medicine).

Martinsville City and Henry County Dog Licenses will be available to purchase.

The vaccine clinic will be held at the Shelley Frith Drane Adoption Center located at 132 Joseph Martin Highway. Call 638-PAWS (7297) for more information.

Virginia law states that rabies vaccinations should be given to every cat, kitten, dog, and puppy four months old and over. Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system. It kills almost any mammal or human that gets sick from it. However, rabies can be prevented in cats, dogs, ferrets, and some livestock with a rabies vaccination. There have been rabies cases reported in Franklin, Henry, Patrick and Pittsylvania Counties. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to start protecting your pets and your community.
